Initial Observations:
Driving is hair-raising (really hair-raising); there's graffiti everywhere (maybe it originated here???); forget business casual - Italian men wear suits to work; there are more motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles in the city than cars (women in heels and dresses included in the two-wheeled drivers); Italians and their language are beautiful; you can't take in all the impressive architecture; fashion!
Today we took a subway from our hotel out. We went first to the Duomo, a breathtaking cathedral. When we walked in, I actually got teary-eyed; the beauty of the place was overwhelming. From there we walked across the piazza to the Galleria, where all the designer shops can be found, one after the other - Prada, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, etc. Eye candy! Across the street from the Galleria is the famous opera house, Teatro Scala. We stopped at a little place that looked like a coffee shop for a birra (beer) and peach iced tea and ended up having the most delicious food - first a little snack of nuts, little taralles, and chips followed by prosciutto, which was out of this world, with mozzarella, smoked grilled mozzerralla, the creamiest potatoes I've ever tasted, and delicious cooked spinach. We just kept looking at each other and saying "ummm!" This evening we took a walk around our hotel. We were delighted to see little outdoor cafes everywhere, an extensive trolley system running, and so many balconies with pretty flowers. Oh, I'm in love with Italy already.
